General Information

(compiled with the input and advice of Mary Denyer, Assistant Secretary and Head of Scholarship Administration for the Marshall Scholarships, and Caroline Cracraft, Vice
Consul for the British Consulate in Chicago)

All of the top tier scholarships are looking for well-rounded applicants who show exceptional intelligence, dedication, leadership skills, and involvement in the world around them. That said, the Marshall tends to emphasize academic ability and educational diplomacy slightly more than similar scholarships such as the Rhodes.

Although the Marshall places great emphasis on academic ability and potential for success in a British degree program, the Scholarship is not limited to those who intend to be academics. In fact, there is a preference for candidates who aspire to non-academic careers.

The Marshall Scholarship is funded by the British government, and is intended to provide a distinctly British educational and cultural experience. Accordingly, selectors are unlikely to award Scholarships to students proposing degree programs that would require a significant amount of research/study time spent outside the U.K.

To get a sense of the qualities the Marshall Commission is looking for in applicants, it can be helpful to browse through the short bios of previous Scholars, which can be found at http://www.marshallscholarship.org/profiles.html.
