Tips for Preparing the Policy Proposal

Annotated Application Essays
In addition to preparing a Personal Statement and Policy Proposal, applicants for the Truman Scholarship must respond to a series of application essay questions. The Truman Foundation staff identifies “poor writing” as one of the factors that most frequently results in a candidate’s elimination from further consideration.

Application essay questions number 7, 8, 9 and 15 are cited by the Foundation as those that most often cause applicants difficulty. The Truman Foundation has selected a number of sample essay responses for each of these “problem questions,” describing why each is considered a satisfactory or unsatisfactory response.
